CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT

HISTORIANS ON SPORT – 2008

SATURDAY 25 OCTOBER, 10:30am – 5pm

The International Centre for Sport History and Culture (ICSHC), De Montfort University, Leicester, will host its eighth ‘Historians on Sport’ conference on Saturday 25 October 2008 in the Faculty of Humanities , De Montfort University. The ICSHC is sticking to its familiar formula of asking distinguished scholars in the Humanities to reflect upon their specialist area of research in relation to the wider history of sport.

We have been fortunate to attract yet another group of well known and intellectually creative researchers as speakers. The ‘visual’ figures prominently this year with papers from Prof. Lynda Nead, Birkbeck College, London, and Prof. Christopher Breward, Royal College of Art and the V & A. We are also delighted that Prof. Hugh McLeod, Birmingham University, will speak on his current research into the history of sport and religion in modern Britain.  Prof. Sebastian Darbon, a leading French anthropologist from the Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), will discuss his new book on Sport and British Imperialism, which was recently published in France. Finally, following our custom of inviting one specialist sports historian, Dr Jack Williams has agreed to present the first fruits of his new research on cricket and broadcasting in Britain in the twentieth century.

As usual there will be ample time for questions and a drink afterwards. We hope to welcome old friends and new researchers to what promises to be an intellectually enjoyable day for all those seriously interested in the history of sport.

The conference fee will be £25 (£10 for students) and includes a buffet lunch.
