Job Description
The Department of Kinesiology and Health Education at The University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a full-time (nine month) tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning in August 2009 to teach in a new sports humanities major called Physical Culture and Sports. All candidates are expected to have:
1) A doctoral degree in Sport History, Sport Philosophy, or other field in the Sport Humanities, Social Sciences of Sport, or Sport Management;
2) An established record of scholarly publication with an emphasis on sport history, sport philosophy, or other areas of the sport humanities or social sciences.
3) Extramural funding or demonstrated potential for extramural funding;
4) Ability to teach classes in sport history, sport philosophy, sport law, sports and media, or other allied areas of the sport humanities and social sciences. We are especially interested in candidates who have a background well-suited to the teaching of courses with substantial writing content.
The successful candidate will be asked to: a) actively engage in scholarly research and publication; b) recruit graduate students and supervise theses and dissertations; c) teach undergraduate courses in the new major in Physical Culture and Sports, and teach graduate courses suitable for students in the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Sport Studies and the graduate program in Sport Management; d) write grants and seek extramural funding; and, e) participate in the advising of Sport Management interns. The normal teaching load for tenure-track faculty in our Department is 2-1. The Interdisciplinary Ph.D. program enjoys an excellent relationship with both the American Studies Program and the Department of History at UT, which provide opportunities for collaborative research and interaction. The opening of the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education’s new research center and library—The H.J. Lutcher Stark Center for Physical Culture and Sports in the Spring of 2009—will also provide a variety of resources for historical and philosophical research and interaction (www.edb.utexas.edi/todd-mclean/).
