General notes: The Stark Center for Physical Culture and Sports is a research center with archives and gallery displays to be located in the new North End Zone building on the campus of the University of Texas.  The new facility will open in the Spring of 2009.   During the fall of 2008, the person holding this position will 1) assist with the organization of the Todd-McLean Collection to ready it for moving and 2) participate in the planning, writing of text, and execution for the exhibits in the Stark Center galleries.

  

Additional Information

Purpose of position:  Organize and describe artifacts, photographs, books, magazines, correspondence, and other materials in various formats for the Stark Center for Physical Culture and Sports.  Prepare and post finding aids according to archival standards using Encoded Archival Description (EAD) format. Assist with creation of exhibits for Stark Center Galleries. Assist with research needs of Stark Center patrons and visitors.

 

Responsibilities: Arrange and describe artifacts, photographs and other materials in various formats for the Stark Center for Physical Culture and Sports. Create and maintain accessible, retrievable computer archives and databases, incorporating current advances in electric information storage technology.  Organize archival records and develop classification systems to facilitate access to archival materials.  Assist with the creation, implementation and updating of policies for collection preservation, access, and security. Assist with preservation of artifacts and other items in Collections.   Review and make recommendations for the processing and disposition of collections.  Support research through serving on-site patrons and responding to research queries relative to Stark Center Collections.   In concert with Co-Directors, determine cataloging priorities and create  policies for cataloging of books, archives and other Collections.  Select and edit documents and artifacts for publication and display; assist with creation of gallery exhibits.  Assist with Center publications.  Assist with educational and public outreach programs, such as tours, workshops, lectures, and classes.  Supervise student workers and other staff.   Reports to the Stark Center Co-Directors.

 

Marginal/Incidental functions:  Other related functions as assigned.

 

Required qualifications:  Master's degree in library and information science from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent job experience;  knowledge of archival and preservation policies and practices; research and reference skills necessary to process archives and to assist patrons; experience in rare book cataloging; strong interpersonal skills; strong verbal and written communications skills; ability to supervise and train staff.  Prefer candidate with interest/expertise in history of sports, golf history, and/or physical culture history.  Previous library, museum or archival experience preferred. 

 

Working conditions:  Exposure to standard office conditions.  Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.  Use of manual dexterity.  Security Sensitive; criminal background check conducted.  Viewing, speaking, listening, attention to detail, communicating effectively with diverse groups.  Ability to work in a small environment.

 

Special requirements:  Ability to lift boxes and other items weighing up to 40 pounds.

 

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
